Gifts of Siberia: Black chokeberry

A chapter on how black chokeberry supports the heart and blood vessels

The genus name, Aronia, is from the Greek word "aria." This is the Greek name for the species of Sorbus, whose fruits are similar to the chokeberry. The species name, melanocarpa, combines two words: "melano," meaning black, and "carpa," meaning fruit. The common name, chokeberry, refers to the tart and bitter taste of the berries, which are edible but so astringent they may cause choking. The noble, deep, and easily recognizable black color of the berries is due to coloring substances called anthocyanins. Despite their small size, the berries are rich in numerous benefits.

The native land of the aronia shrub is North America. In Europe, the plant was introduced in the 21st century, initially cultivated only for decorative purposes. Black chokeberry arrived in Russia in 1930, brought to the fruit and berry station in Gorno-Altaysk, from where its large-scale distribution across the country began.

A Treasure for Our Heart

Black chokeberry is well-known for supporting cardiovascular health.

It contains a significant amount of Vitamin P, which is crucial for maintaining healthy blood vessels. This important vitamin strengthens the walls of blood vessels, increases their resistance to the effects of intense blood flow, helps to avoid increased capillary permeability.

Black chokeberry is also rich in minerals. It contains iron, fluoride, calcium, molybdenum, and especially high amounts of potassium and magnesium. These two substances significantly impact the heart muscle's function, ensuring the proper functioning of the heart rhythm. Therefore, black chokeberry is an effective remedy for preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases.

A Versatile and Multifaceted Berry

Black chokeberry is also beneficial for the gastrointestinal tract. It contains a high amount of pectin, a powerful detoxifier that binds harmful substances in the intestines and helps eliminate them. Tannins give black chokeberry its astringent flavor and have a strong antiseptic effect. An interesting feature of the plant is its ability to accumulate iodine, making it beneficial for the thyroid gland. Black chokeberry also protects our vision thanks to its content of carotenoids and anthocyanins. These compounds help improve microcirculation in the retinal vessels and increase the production of light-sensitive eye pigment, rhodopsin.

The vitamin composition of the berries is diverse. Black chokeberry contains a substantial amount of B vitamins, which have a positive impact on the nervous system. The fruit is rich in Vitamins A, K, E, and C, the latter being a natural immune defender.

This remarkable plant has numerous beneficial properties. This is why black chokeberry is highly valued by our Company, and is included in the formulas of health and beauty products such as:
